Industry News

The ATM industry in Canada has seen an approx. three-year roller coaster ride. The apparent allure of a quick buck has brought many opportunists into this industry.  Companies unable to provide excellent customer service and top of the line hardware have fallen by the wayside. In the wake of this fallout some existing ATM owners have been left without an opportunity to structure a package to suit “your” needs.

 ATM Marketing Information

  • The typical ATM customer will spend 20-25% more than a non-ATM customer.

  • The largest portion of ATM users (40%) go to the ATM an average of 10 times per  month.

  • The most popular day for ATM usage is Friday.

  • Among people that use both debit as well as credit cards, debit cards are used more often.

  • 85% or approximately 18 million Canadians hold a bankcard.

Independent studies show that cash retention among large stores is between 30-35% while retention by smaller retailers is 35-40%.  Nightclubs show retention of 70-80% of the dispensed cash staying in the club.

Safety at the ATM

  • When approaching an ATM be aware and alert for any suspicious people or situations.

  • Never approach an ATM if the lights in the area are not working. Avoid using ATM’s with obscuring bushes around them.

  • When waiting in line wait well behind the person in front of you. If the person behind you is too close when you are using the ATM ask them kindly to please step back a bit.

  • Stand close to the ATM during your transaction and try to shield the PIN number and the details of the transaction while at the ATM.

  • If you drive to the ATM and get out of your vehicle to use the ATM, remember to lock your vehicle doors when getting out.

  • Do not write your PIN number down, and report any suspicious behavior or problems to your local police department as well as to the ATM owner.  There should be a toll free number affixed to the front of the ATM for this purpose.

Some Common Error Codes for the Triton 9600

If problems do occur, there are simple remedies in getting your ATM back on course and error free. Take the time to correctly identify some of the common error codes.

    • ATM screen shows: "INCORRECT P.I.N."
Probable Cause: Your P.I.N. number selected does not match your bank's information. Call your bank.

    • ATM screen shows:  "INVALID "
Probable Cause: Financial institution who issued ATM card is not a member of the networks displayed on the ATM. Look at the back of your card and see if any of the symbols match what is displayed on the ATM. If none of the symbols match, the card is not accepted at the ATM.

    • ATM screen shows: "EXCEEDS DOLLAR LIMIT"
Probable Cause: The amount you have selected to withdraw exceeds the amount permitted by your bank. Try lower amount or contact your bank to increase your daily ATM withdrawal limit.

    • ATM screen shows: "INSUFFICIENT FUNDS or UNABLE TO PROCESS"
Probable Cause: Your financial institution is not authorizing the dispense of funds you have requested. Please contact your bank.

    • ATM screen shows: "INVALID CARD"
Probable Cause: The networks supplying the service do not support the card you have inserted into the ATM or the card you have inserted in NOT an ATM card.
